Arizona Water Operator Certification Reciprocity

American Water College proudly serves students in all 50 of the United States.  Our Student Support Team gets questions from people all over the country. One question we get frequently is “Does Arizona recognize water and wastewater licenses from other states?”

The short answer is yes.  The Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) Operator Certification Reciprocity Form says, “ADEQ shall grant reciprocity to an active certificate earned by examination from another jurisdiction (R18-5-110).”

Following is some information that will help you navigate the process of seeking reciprocity.  First, you must meet the eligibility requirements.  Next, you apply for reciprocity and provide information about your current certification/license and training history.  Finally, your application package will be evaluated by the ADEQ.

Eligibility

To be eligible, you must:

  • Have a current license from another state, territory, or country (licensing authority);
  • Have taken an exam to receive the license;

To verify ADEQ requirements for your license, visit ADEQ’s Operator Certification web page.

How to Apply for Reciprocity

  • Complete the Operator Certification Reciprocity Form.
  • Provide a copy of current active certificate(s) from another jurisdiction.
  • Submit a $250 Reciprocity Review fee.
  • Once approved you will be contacted for the New Certificate fee of $65.00 per new certificate.

The Evaluation Process

As a part of the evaluation process, the ADEQ may:

  • Request information from the licensing authority to substantiate your current license status; and
  • Determine the level or class of ADEQ certification that your current license would equivocate to when reciprocity is granted.
